The Whisper Tools ™ Core Module provides the basic framework within which all the modules function. It is the backbone of the system and provides all the core (i.e., critical) functions, include installation, updating, validation and repair of an installation, database control management, error handling, notification of problems to the webmaster, and tools for encryption, basic email, various city and country tools, FormBuilder reader, web page combo box (with data binding), backup facilities for the database, the token processing framework (tokens are a key concept in most of the Whisper modules), and more.
The Whisper Tools are modular in structure. Modules can be added to an existing Whisper Tools installation by dropping the files in place and running a quick script. Sometimes adding a module will activate additional capabilities in another module (membership module, for instance, will work well with the eMail & Pubs module if it is present, offering additional functionality it draws from the other. The Whisper Tools Core provides several functions to make this if-a-module-is-present framework function.
It is possible to extend the Whisper Tools to include new or custom functionality, modifying something that already there but not quite the way you want it or adding something completely new, needed for your particular website project. Developer documentation will be available to facilitate this process.
Short version: The Whisper Tools have been designed to be flexible, fast and robust and extensible, offering potentially lots of functionality, without cluttering you up with things you don't really want right now. The Whisper Core is required by all Whisper Tools modules.
